Maha Shivaratri, the Great Night of Shiva, is observed on the new moon night in the Hindu month of Phalguna, dedicated to Lord Shiva's cosmic dance and transcendent meditation. Devotees remain awake through the night, chanting sacred mantras and performing elaborate rituals to honour the deity who embodies destruction and renewal. This festival celebrates the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, and the night when Shiva performed his divine Tandava dance.
Significance
Maha Shivaratri holds profound spiritual significance as the night when Lord Shiva is believed to have performed his celestial dance of creation, preservation, and dissolution. According to sacred lore, this is also the auspicious occasion when Shiva and Parvati were united in marriage, symbolizing the union of consciousness and energy. The all-night vigil represents the devotee's commitment to transcendence, awakening inner awareness through meditation, chanting of the Mahamantra, and selfless service. Fasting and wakefulness during this night are believed to purify the soul, dissolve karmic debts, and grant the grace of Shiva's blessings for spiritual liberation and worldly harmony.
