About Venkatesa Perumal Kovil

This temple houses the primary deity Sri Lakshmi Narayana, known locally as Sri Venkatesa Perumal, with his consort Bhoomi Devi (Sridevi) positioned on his left thigh within the sanctum sanctorum. The moolavar statue exemplifies Chola-period architecture and is traditionally attributed to installation during the reign of Paranthaka Chola, also known as Veera Narayanan. The temple gained prominence in the early 17th century when the saint Sri Narayana Theerthar visited Varagur following a white pig (Varaha), where he received Viswaroopa Darshan and composed the Krishna Leela Tharangini. According to tradition, Lord Venkatesa danced to the tunes of this composition when sung at the temple. Management responsibilities have been distributed among five families since Indian Independence, with various families conducting major festivals including Sri Rama Navami, Avani Avittam, Vaikunta Ekadasi, and Akshaya Thrithiyai.
