Located on West Main Street in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, Sri Bangaru Kamakshi Amman Temple stands as a significant spiritual center dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi, a gracious manifestation of Goddess Parvati. Built in the 1760s under Maratha ruler Pratap Singh Bhonsle, the temple features classical South Indian architecture including a rajagopura, mukha mandapa, sanctum sanctorum, and vimana. The principal deity is depicted in standing posture holding a parrot, with a golden idol traditionally coated in black punugu—a protective measure applied during the idol's historical relocation from Kanchipuram to safeguard it from invaders. The temple entrance is marked by a large statue of Varada Maha Ganapati, while an adjacent shrine houses Kamakodi Amman. The temple draws devotees throughout the day for darshan and aarti, with the atmosphere intensifying during evening rituals and festival celebrations, particularly during Navratri when special pujas are performed and extended hours are observed.
