About Veemeeswarar Temple, Serapanancheri

Located in the small village of Serapanancheri near Padappai in Kanchipuram district, this ancient Shiva temple enshrines Lord Veemeeswarar, believed to be the ruler of all 27 star constellations. The temple features a six-foot-tall Shivalinga and houses Goddess Swarnambigai within the same sanctum, an unusual arrangement in South Indian temple architecture. The shrine is distinguished by its Gajaprishta (elephant-backed) apsidal design, characteristic of early Chola construction, and is one of eighteen such temples between Mamallapuram and Kanchipuram built by the same sculptor-architect. Two Nandi bulls guard the sanctum, and across the road stands a separate shrine to Surya (the Sun God), creating a unique layout where the deity appears to eternally worship Lord Shiva. Stone inscriptions dated to 1182 CE with Tamil and Kranthi script document the temple's renovation by Chola King Kulothunga III, when the settlement was known as Peruvanchur.
