Valikandapuram Valeeswarar Temple

Est. Chola period (predates 11th century)

About Valikandapuram Valeeswarar Temple

The temple belongs to the Chola period, placing its origins among Tamil Nadu's most significant architectural and religious heritage. It predates the renowned Brihadisvara Temple, marking it as an important example of early Chola-era construction. This antiquity has been formally recognized: the temple holds the status of a Monument of National Importance, acknowledging its value to India's cultural and architectural legacy.

The temple's age—estimated between 1,000 and 2,000 years—reflects centuries of continuous worship and community devotion. Its location in Valikandapuram, within Veppanthattai Taluk of Perambalur district, places it in a region rich with Chola-period temples and historical sites.

Daily Worship and the Saptha Kannikas

The temple maintains a distinctive daily worship schedule. Darshan is available from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and again from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A notable feature of worship here is the daily performance of pujas to Lord Dakshinamurthi throughout all seven days of the week—a practice less common than the Thursday-only observance found in many other Shiva temples.

The Saptha Kannikas receive dedicated worship on specific days, each associated with particular blessings. Devotees approach these forms for varied needs: those concerned with fate and mental peace pray to Brahmmi on Sundays; those seeking salvation address Mahaswari on Mondays; those facing adverse planetary influences related to Mars pray to Goumari on Tuesdays. Vaishnavi receives prayers on Saturdays for family prosperity, Varahi on Wednesdays for relief from illness, Indrani on Thursdays for planetary remedies, and Chamundi on Fridays for removal of obstacles. These prayers are offered alongside nivedhanas (ritual food offerings) to Dakshinamurthi, recognizing his role as the guiding force behind these energies.

Festivals and Special Observances

Masi Mahashivrathri, celebrated in February or March, draws special ritual attention with elaborate pujas honoring Lord Shiva. On Panchami days—the fifth day of both new moon and full moon cycles—the temple performs dedicated pujas to Lord Veerabadra, a fierce manifestation of Shiva. According to temple tradition, Veerabadra arrived at this site mounted on Nandi (the sacred bull), whose image stands outside the temple near the flag post.

The temple also houses shrines to other deities within its compound: Lord Muruga, Lord Vinayaka, Sani Bhagwan (Saturn), and Lord Lakshmi Narayana, allowing devotees to offer prayers to multiple forms within a single visit.

Visiting Information and Practical Details

The temple is located on the Grand Southern Trunk Road in Valikandapuram, Perambalur district, with the postal code 621115. The best season to visit is October through March, when the climate is cooler and more comfortable for travel and worship. Contact details for inquiries are available: +91-4146-231159 and +91-94432-93061.

Visitors should be aware that festival days may have different darshan hours than the standard schedule. As with Hindu temples generally, modest dress is appropriate—covering shoulders and knees shows respect for the sacred space. Shoes are typically removed before entering the inner sanctum.
