This sacred temple dedicated to Lord Shiva stands as one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the Thevaram hymns of saints Tirugnana Sambandar and Sundarar. The presiding deity, known as Manickavannar and Rathna Pureeswarar, is worshipped as a Swayambumurthi linga. According to temple lore, during the churning of the milk ocean, the serpent Vasuki performed penance after Lord Shiva consumed poison to protect all beings. The deity's consort is venerated as Brama Kunthalambica and Vandar Poonkuzhali. The temple complex houses additional shrines including those of Lord Muruga, Dakshinamurthi, Ashta Naga Vinayaka, and Mother Durga. The temple is estimated to be 1000-2000 years old and draws devotees throughout the day for darshan and ritual worship.
