This ancient Shaivite temple enshrines Lord Adhimooleswarar in the form of a self-manifested lingam, with the consort Goddess Nithyakalyani facing south in a separate shrine. The temple complex features Dravidian architecture with two prakarams and a five-tiered raja gopuram, housing rare sculptural forms including a veena-holding Dakshinamurthy depicted without disciples—a form particularly revered by musicians. The temple's founding legend recounts a Chola king's discovery of divine milk oozing from an anthill during a hunting expedition, leading to the establishment of this sacred site. The name Pattrurai derives from 'Paal' (milk) and 'Thurai' (place), commemorating this miraculous event. During Purattasi and Panguni months, the sun's rays align precisely with the lingam, demonstrating sophisticated astronomical design. The temple maintains traditional Shaiva Agama practices with six daily rituals and celebrates major festivals including Maha Shivaratri and Tirukarthikai.
