This historically significant temple stands in Kodungallur, a former capital of the Chera kingdom and one of ancient South Asia's earliest ports. Built in traditional Kerala architectural style, the temple is believed to have been constructed during the Chera period and is mentioned in ancient Tamil Sangam poetry, with 27 Sangam poets having sung of the Cheras who visited this sacred site. The temple holds legendary importance as the place from which Cheraman Perumal, the traditional legendary king of Kerala, is believed to have ascended to Kailasa accompanied by the Saiva saint Sundaramoorthi Nayanar. The main deity Mahadeva (Shiva) serves as the tutelary deity of the Cheras, and the temple's spiritual significance is enhanced by its 33 sub-deities, the highest number found in any Kerala temple.
