Thiruvairanikkulam Mahadeva Temple
About Thiruvairanikkulam Mahadeva Temple
The main sanctum houses Lord Shiva as the chief deity. Before the sanctum stands the idol of Nandikeshwara, the bull vehicle of Shiva. Adjacent to the shrine, facing east, is Lord Vigneshwara. Within the temple grounds, in the outer enclosure, are additional deities: Sathidevi and Goddess Kali are positioned in the western direction, Lord Dharmasastha occupies another location, and a four-armed form of Lord Vishnu faces east. This arrangement of multiple shrines within the temple complex allows devotees to offer worship to various aspects of the divine according to their inclinations.
Parvati's Sanctum: The Twelve-Day Opening
A remarkable feature unique to this temple is that the sanctum of Goddess Parvati opens to devotees for only twelve days each year. During the Nadathurappu Mahotsavam festival, which runs from January 2 to 13, the goddess's shrine becomes accessible for darshan. Outside these twelve days, the sanctum remains closed. This restricted access makes the festival period particularly significant for those seeking the goddess's direct blessings, and the temple experiences heightened devotional activity during these dates.
Daily Worship and Darshan
The temple maintains regular worship throughout the year at the Shiva shrine. Morning darshan begins at 4:30 AM, with Ushapoja performed at this hour. The Abhishekam, a ritual bathing of the deity, takes place between 7:00 and 8:00 AM. Noon worship occurs at 5:00 PM, followed by Athazhapooja at 7:30 PM. Morning darshan continues until 11:00 AM, while evening darshan runs from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM on regular days.
During the Nadathurappu Mahotsavam festival in January, the temple extends its hours. Morning darshan begins at 4:30 AM and continues until 1:30 PM, while evening darshan runs from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Visitors planning to attend during the festival should anticipate larger crowds and plan accordingly. Early mornings and evenings are generally recommended for worship throughout the year.
Nadathurappu Mahotsavam Festival
The Nadathurappu Mahotsavam, observed in January, is the principal festival of the temple. This twelve-day celebration centers on the opening of Goddess Parvati's sanctum, allowing devotees access to her darshan during this period alone. The festival draws significant numbers of pilgrims seeking the blessings of both Shiva and Parvati. The extended darshan hours during the festival accommodate the increased devotional activity.
