About Sundaresvarar Temple, Kundayur
Located in Kundayur within Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, Sundaresvarar Temple is a Dravidian-style Hindu sanctuary dedicated to the deity Shiva, represented through the lingam form known as Sundaresvarar. The temple holds significance as one of the Vaippu Sthalams, sacred sites sung by the revered Tamil Saivite saint Sundarar. The presiding goddess is Meenakshi. The temple features a distinctive architectural design without a gopuram, instead offering entrances on the eastern and western sides. Within its precincts are found the shrines of Rishaburisvarar and Mangalambikai, along with two sacred Atti trees. The temple stands approximately 34.4 meters in elevation and is known by the alternate name Sokkanathasamy Devasthanam. A notable annual celebration is the Nel Atti Vizha festival held during Masi Maham in the Tamil month of Masi (February–March), commemorating a legendary event where the deity sent paddy to the devotee Sundarar.
