About Sun Temple

Somnath Temple stands at Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Gujarat, perched at the edge of the Arabian Sea on India's western coast. According to legend, the Moon God Chandra came to this sacred site, fashioned a lingam from sand, and prayed to Lord Shiva to remove a curse affecting his brightness. The temple's name means 'Lord of the Moon,' reflecting this mythological origin. The shrine has endured seven destructions and reconstructions throughout its history, earning it the title 'Shrine Eternal.' The current stone structure follows Chalukya architectural style and was rebuilt and consecrated on 11 May 1951 by India's first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The sanctum houses a self-manifested Jyotirlinga, and the temple features intricate carvings depicting Puranic stories. The Banastambha or Arrow Pillar at the sea's edge bears an inscription indicating no land exists in a straight line between this point and Antarctica, demonstrating ancient geographical knowledge.
