Sri Sri Bura Shivdham
About Sri Sri Bura Shivdham
The temple's construction dates to the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, between 1605 and 1627, making it a structure that has witnessed nearly four centuries of continuous religious practice. This period of establishment places the temple among the oldest surviving Hindu temples in the region, a testament to its enduring significance and the resilience of the community that maintains it.
The temple's long history has not been without hardship. In 1912, a severe storm inflicted substantial damage to the structure, threatening its survival. The temple's restoration came through the devotion and resources of Raja Sir Bijay Chand Mahtab of Burdwan, himself a devotee of Shiva. The Raja's reconstruction efforts restored the temple to prominence, and during this period of renewal, the temple received visits from the King and Queen of Nepal, indicating its recognition as a site of religious importance beyond Dhaka itself.
The Temple During Modern Conflict
The temple's history intersects with the broader history of the region. During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, the temple and its community faced violence. The temple's caretaker and several others were killed during this period, representing a tragic chapter in the temple's existence. Despite this trauma, the temple has continued to function as an active place of worship, serving as a center for Hindu religious life in Dhaka.
Worship of Shiva
As a Shiva temple, Sri Sri Bura Shivdham is dedicated to one of Hinduism's principal deities. Shiva is traditionally worshipped in temples through various forms and representations, and devotees typically approach the deity with reverence and devotion. The temple's long history suggests an established tradition of Shiva worship among Dhaka's Hindu population, with the temple serving as a focal point for this practice across generations.
Maha Shivaratri Observance
The temple observes Maha Shivaratri, the major festival dedicated to Shiva that falls in the Hindu lunar month of Phalguna (typically February or March). This festival is significant in Shiva temples across the Hindu tradition, drawing devotees who wish to honor the deity through prayer, fasting, and ritual observance. The festival at Sri Sri Bura Shivdham likely draws both regular worshippers and those who visit specifically for this occasion.

Visitors to Sri Sri Bura Shivdham should approach the temple with respect for its religious significance and the community that worships there.
