About Shringeri Sharadamba Temple
Located on the banks of the Tunga river in Sringeri, this temple is the foremost of the four Peethams founded by the 8th century philosopher-saint Sri Adi Shankaracharya, the principal exponent of Advaita philosophy. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Sharada, the presiding deity of wisdom and knowledge. The Peetham functions as both a place of worship and a center for Vedic learning, hosting various religious programs and scholarly activities. The temple maintains strict dress code requirements for devotees entering the premises, mandating traditional Indian attire. The sanctuary experiences particularly high visitation during Sharada Navratri, celebrated over nine days typically in September or October, which represents the most significant festival at the Peetham.
