Located in Garravkendra, Mathura, Bhuteshwar Mahadev Temple stands as one of the city's oldest and most significant temples, distinct for its dedication to Lord Shiva rather than Lord Krishna. The temple houses a Shiva Lingam as its presiding deity and contains the sacred Patal Devi Cave, historically worshipped by King Kansa. According to local tradition, the temple's name derives from its protective role—Bhuteshwar meaning 'lord of all beings'—as it guards Mathura and its residents from negative forces. The sanctuary spans approximately 100 square meters and features a unique architectural element: a conduit connecting the exterior grilled side-gate to the interior, enabling devotees to perform abhisheka (ritual bathing) of the Shivling. Multiple smaller Shiva Lingams on the left side of the main entrance allow independent worship without priestly assistance. The temple serves as the traditional starting and ending point of the 84 Kos Braj Parikrama, and local belief holds that a Mathura pilgrimage remains incomplete without darshan here.
