About Shiv Mandir, Ambarnath

Constructed during the Shilahara dynasty, likely by King Chhittaraja with possible completion by his son Mummuni, this historic temple stands on the banks of the Waldhuni river approximately 2 kilometers from Ambarnath East railway station. The structure exemplifies early medieval temple architecture with its black basalt construction and intricate stone carvings. The sanctum lies unusually about 20 steps below ground level and remains open to the sky due to its deliberately truncated or incomplete spire, a feature that has earned the temple its name meaning "Lord of the Sky." The swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva linga rests in the deepest chamber, and the temple's austere interior contrasts with its richly decorated exterior. The temple hosts one of Maharashtra's largest fairs during Mahashivaratri, attracting thousands of devotees over 3-4 days.
