Khidkaleshwar Mandir

The temple's origins are traditionally attributed to the Pandava era, though documented restoration work dates to the 17th century. The structure exemplifies Hemadpanti architecture, a regional style recognizable in other temples of Thane district, notably at nearby Ambarnath. The building material is black stone, worked with considerable skill. The temple's design follows a traditional plan comprising a sanctum (garbhagriha), an inner chamber (antaral), and an assembly hall (sabhamandap). The outer walls, pillars, doorways, windows, and cornices display carved ornamentation. Lion sculptures adorn both sides of the temple's exterior.

Within the assembly hall stands a monolithic black stone image of Nandi, the bull associated with Shiva worship. Multiple deity images throughout the temple are marked with vermillion. The sanctum entrance features carved stone relief work, including an image of Ganesha on the lintel. The sanctum itself is positioned slightly below the level of the inner chamber, requiring visitors to descend steps to enter.

The Pandava Legend

Local tradition recounts that during their forest exile, the Pandava brothers discovered a self-manifested Shiva lingam at this location. According to the narrative, Yudhishthira and his four brothers began collective worship to please Shiva. When Shiva tested their devotion by appearing as an elderly Brahmin requesting five flowers before sunset, the brothers faced a dilemma: leaving to search for flowers would interrupt their worship. Yudhishthira assigned Sahadeva to continue the ritual while the others searched. When Arjuna found lotus flowers in a pond, a boulder threatened him; Bhima used his strength to stop it, saving his brother. Nakul then swiftly delivered the flowers before sunset, allowing the worship to continue unbroken. Pleased by their devotion and the bonds between them, Shiva revealed himself and blessed them with victory in their future conflict with the Kauravas. The Pandavas subsequently established the temple at this site to commemorate the divine encounter.

Maha Shivaratri and Pilgrimage

Maha Shivaratri, the annual festival honoring Shiva, is the most significant observance at this temple. During this festival, the temple attracts hundreds of ascetics and pilgrims from Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Uttarakhand. The festival draws devotees seeking darshan of Khidkaleshwar during this auspicious night dedicated to Shiva worship.

Temple Grounds and Facilities

The temple is situated beside a village pond, accessed via the Kalyan-Shil road. Ancient trees—including banyan, peepal, fig, and tamarind—line the approach from the entrance gateway to the sanctum. Beneath these trees, vendors sell ritual items including garlands, flowers, bel leaves, and coconuts, as well as prasad (blessed food offerings). A large banyan tree near the temple houses shrines to Ganesha, Shankara with Parvati, Swami Samarth, and Durga Devi. The temple management has erected thatched shelters within the grounds for the convenience of worshippers.
