About Khidkaleshwar Mandir

Situated on the banks of the Khadkali River in Dombivli, a suburb of Mumbai, Khidkaleshwar Mandir houses a self-manifested Shivalinga discovered by the Pandavas during their forest exile. According to Hindu mythology and the Mahabharata, the five Pandava brothers built this temple with their own hands after finding the sacred lingam at this location. The temple underwent reconstruction in the seventeenth century and exemplifies Hemadpanti architectural style, constructed from black stone with intricate carvings adorning its walls, pillars, entrance, windows, and corners. The sanctum comprises a gathering hall, vestibule, and inner sanctum. Beyond the main Shivalinga, the temple houses ancient idols of Lord Ganesha and Lord Hanuman, both covered in vermillion. The temple complex features a banyan tree and ancient trees including fig and other varieties. Notably, during Mahashivaratri each year, hundreds of ascetics from Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Uttarakhand visit to pay their respects.
