About Rajarajeshwara Temple

Located in Taliparamba municipality, approximately 25 kilometers from Kannur in Kerala's Kannur district, the Rajarajeshwara Temple stands as a significant pilgrimage destination dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple derives its name from one of Shiva's appellations, meaning 'The Lord of Rajaraja' or the king of kings. Historically, the site occupies the ancient Perinchelloor Gramam, one of 64 brahminical settlements established by Parasurama in Kerala, and was formerly known as Lakshmipura due to its association with prosperity. The temple gained further prominence with the installation of India's largest bronze Shiva idol, standing 14 feet in height and weighing approximately 4,200 kilograms, which was unveiled by Kerala's Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The temple's architectural heritage includes a shikhara that was among the tallest of its era, and the main temple structure features a top weighing about 90 tonnes.
