Keezhthali Siva Temple
About Keezhthali Siva Temple
The temple's modern history reflects both loss and restoration. By the early 2000s, only the original Shivalingam remained on a small hillock, with the surrounding temple structures largely vanished. The land itself had been reduced to approximately 16 cents (a traditional land measurement unit in Kerala), with the larger original plot of 1.36 acres having been alienated over centuries.
In 2007, the temple trust acquired approximately 36 cents of additional land surrounding the hillock, enabling reconstruction efforts. An Annadhana Hall (dining facility) and staff quarters were constructed at the rear of the main shrine. A comprehensive second phase of renovation began in February 2012, with the foundation stone laid by Jagadguru Sree Sree Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal of Kanchi Kamakoti Peedom on 14 November 2011. This phase included construction of subsidiary shrines (Upadevatha temples) dedicated to Bhagavathi (Parvathi), Narasimhamoorthy, Sasthavu (Ayyappan), and Ganapathi, which were consecrated in May 2014. The temple also constructed a Chuttambalam (open pavilion) and stone steps to facilitate access to the elevated main shrine.
Daily Worship and Darshan
The temple observes three daily worship periods. Morning darshan, known as Usha, begins at 05:30 and continues until 10:00—a time traditionally associated with dawn worship and favored by many devotees seeking a serene atmosphere. A noon period opens from 12:00 to 14:00. Evening darshan, called Athazha, is available from 17:30 to 19:30. The early morning hours between 5:30 and 7:00 AM are particularly noted for their peaceful atmosphere, making this an ideal time for those seeking quieter worship.
Devotees may arrange specific offerings and poojas for various purposes through the temple's system of standard and special offerings. The temple office can be reached at 9846717191 (Manager) or 9048373474 (Office), with office hours from 5:30 AM to 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Email inquiries may be directed to keezhthalitemple@gmail.com. Festival days may alter these timings, so confirmation with the temple office is advisable for those planning visits during special occasions.
Festivals and Observances
The temple draws particular devotional attention during Maha Shivaratri, the major festival honoring Shiva, and during Pradosham—the twilight period observed on specific lunar dates when Shiva is traditionally worshipped. These occasions attract significant gatherings of devotees seeking deeper spiritual engagement. Visitors interested in experiencing the temple during these observances should contact the temple office in advance to confirm exact dates and any special arrangements.
Practical Information for Visitors
The temple is located at coordinates 11.978787, 75.3693518 in Tali village, Talappilly Taluk, Varavoor Grama Panchayat, Thrissur District, Kerala. Visitors should note that timings may shift on festival days, making advance confirmation with the temple office advisable. The temple provides an Annadhana Hall for devotees, and staff quarters are available on the grounds. As with most Hindu temples, visitors are expected to observe respectful conduct and appropriate dress; temples of this tradition typically request that visitors remove footwear before entering the sanctum and dress modestly.
