The temple's founding is rooted in local religious narrative rather than documented historical records. According to tradition, the goddess manifested from stone on Dainkund Peak in response to the suffering of local people. The account describes her emergence as a young warrior figure, bearing a trident, who engaged in combat with demons to protect the vulnerable. A farmer from the nearby village of Howar is said to have received a divine instruction in a dream to establish a temple at this location, and the shrine was subsequently built according to the goddess's will. While the exact age of the temple remains unclear, it has long served as a center of faith for surrounding communities.

Pohlani Mata Temple sits at approximately 1,200 meters elevation on Dainkund Peak in Rakhed village, roughly 8 to 12 kilometers from Dalhousie. The location offers expansive views across the surrounding landscape, including vistas of the Pir Pinjal range. The temple is set within forested terrain, creating a tranquil environment distinct from busier pilgrimage sites. A teahouse operates at the temple, providing refreshment for visitors. Parking is available, and the final approach is walkable and suitable for most visitors, including children and seniors, though the site is not wheelchair accessible. The moderate crowd levels and easy walking difficulty make it accessible for a range of pilgrims and tourists.

Visiting Hours and Best Times

The temple is open daily from 06:00 to 19:00. The most favorable seasons for a visit are March through June and September through November, when weather conditions in the Himalayan foothills are mild and stable. Morning hours are generally considered the best time of day for a visit. An ideal visit typically requires two hours. Entry to the temple is free. Visitors should dress modestly as is customary at Hindu temples, and remove footwear before entering the inner sanctum.

During the nine days of Navratri, the temple sees increased pilgrimage as devotees arrive with specific requests for the goddess's intervention.
