About Perunna Subrahmanya Swami Temple
Located in the Perunna neighbourhood of Changanacherry in Kottayam district, this temple enshrines Lord Subrahmanya as its primary deity, with secondary shrines dedicated to Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva, Lord Ayyappan, Mahaganapathi, Sarpa Deva, and Rakshasa. The temple is historically significant as the first in Kerala to open its doors to all Hindus regardless of caste, following an order by Sri Chithira Thirunal Maharaja of Travancore. The deity is depicted in a unique post-Tarakasura slaying stance, holding the divine spear (vel) inverted downward—a representation reportedly unparalleled among other Subrahmanya temples. The temple's origins trace to ancient times, with traditional construction dating to 753 AD, and the flag consecration ceremony (dhvaja pratishtha) performed on February 10, 1846. The shrine attracted Mahatma Gandhi during his first visit to Kerala and remains an important spiritual center administered by the Urazhma Devaswam Board, known for its annual Pallivetta Utsav festival.
