Nelluvaaya Dhanvantharee Kshethram
About Nelluvaaya Dhanvantharee Kshethram
The temple displays the architectural conventions of Kerala temple design. Its construction belongs to an ancient period, though precise dating remains uncertain. The structure is managed as a living heritage temple by a local trust, maintaining its traditional character within the quiet village environment of Nelluvai. The setting itself—rural and tranquil—forms part of the temple's spiritual character and contributes to its appeal as a destination for worship and contemplation.
Daily Worship and Rituals
The temple maintains a structured daily schedule of worship. Morning poojas begin at 6:00 AM with Ushapoojam, followed by Pandeeradi Pooja at 8:00 AM and Uchapooja at 10:30 AM. In the evening, Deeparadhana takes place at 6:00 PM, with Athazha Pooja at 7:30 PM. Beyond these regular observances, the temple conducts Archana, Dhanwanthari Pooja and Homam, Udayasthamana Pooja, and offers Palpayasam. Rituals are performed in Sanskrit, Malayalam, and English, accommodating devotees of different linguistic backgrounds. After morning worship, visitors may receive Oushada Prasada (Mukkudi), a blessed offering distributed to those who have participated in darshan.
Festivals and Observances
The temple observes several significant festivals throughout the year. Swargavathil Ekadashi, also known as Vaikunda Ekadashi, falls in December–January and draws particular devotional attention. Oushadhaseva Dinam, celebrated in July–August, incorporates monsoon healing rituals specific to this temple's tradition. Sthrothra Panchashika Day occurs in February–March. The temple also marks Niramaala, Prathishtaadinam, Ashtamirohini, and Kucheladinam. Festival seasons represent optimal times for visiting, as the temple's spiritual energy intensifies and special observances unfold.
Visiting: Timings, Dress, and Etiquette
The temple opens daily from 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Darshan entry is free. A traditional dress code applies: men must wear a mundu (traditional Kerala dhoti) and remain bare-chested within the inner sanctum; shirts, trousers, shorts, and jeans are not permitted in inner areas. Women should wear a saree, salwar kameez with dupatta, or traditional skirts and blouses; western or revealing clothing, shorts, and tight trousers are not appropriate. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the sanctum but permitted outside the main shrine gates. The outer pathways are generally flat, though the inner sanctum contains steps and raised thresholds that may present accessibility challenges. Parking is available at the entrance with additional space along the approach road.
The best times to visit are early mornings between 5:00 and 8:00 AM, during evening aarti times, throughout the winter months (November–February), during the monsoon season (June–September), and during festival periods. These windows offer both practical advantages and spiritual resonance with the temple's rhythms.
