About Nagapattinam Naganathaswamy Temple

Located in Nagore, Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, this ancient Shiva temple features a five-tiered eastern-facing rajagopuram and houses the primary deity Naganathar, believed to be Nagaraja in his divine form. The consort goddess Nagavalli shares the sanctum, while the inner prakaram contains shrines dedicated to Rahu (one of the nine celestial bodies), Dakshinamurti, various Nagas, Valampuri Vinayaka, Muruga, and other deities. According to temple lore, the presiding deity manifested as a Svayambhu Lingam beneath the sacred punnai tree during Vaishakha Purnima (May-June full moon). The temple is celebrated for its spiritual significance in relieving devotees of serpent-related doshas and other afflictions, with local tradition holding that no snake bites occur in this sacred town. The Chandra Theertham, a holy spring created by the Moon deity, serves as the temple's primary water source.
