About Mavoothu Vellappar Temple

This sacred temple was constructed by the Kandamanur zamindar after local farmers discovered a self-manifested idol of Vellappar while excavating for valli kizhangu (a root vegetable) near a mango tree. The deity, known as Mavoothu Vellappar or Velappar, is worshipped as a swayambumurthi and is believed to resolve numerous ailments and difficulties for devotees. The temple is situated in a scenic natural environment surrounded by hills and forests, with a perennial spring flowing beneath the mango tree—locally called Mavootru, derived from 'maa' (mango) and 'oottru' (spring). The spring water is traditionally believed to possess medicinal and healing properties. The temple celebrates major festivals including Chithirai Thiruvizha in April-May, commemorating the wedding of Velappar and Valli, as well as Navaratri and the Cradle Festival.
