Mariyamma Temple

The temple's origins trace to approximately 1200 CE, making it roughly 800 years old. Its establishment coincides with the medieval growth of the Mogaveera community in coastal Karnataka. Fishermen would approach the goddess before each voyage and return with grateful offerings of their finest catch, forging a bond between the sea, the deity, and their livelihoods. Over time, a distinctive votive tradition emerged: devotees commissioned fish-shaped gold offerings, known as nerchaavu, to express gratitude to the Mother who protected them at sea. This practice continues to the present day, marking a unique thread connecting ancient devotion to contemporary worship.

Through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, successive generations renovated and expanded the temple complex. The annual Mari Pooja and Rathotsava (chariot festival) grew into major celebrations that drew thousands from across the region, establishing the temple as a landmark of faith in coastal Karnataka.

The Festival Calendar

The temple observes four major festivals throughout the year. Mari Pooja, held in February or March, is the principal festival and the most significant occasion for devotees. The celebration encompasses multiple sacred rituals: Madasthana Seve, Raashi Pooje, Kanchil Seve, Haalu Hukkisuva Pooje, Maha Ranga Pooje, Rathotsava, and Darshana Bali. These observances draw thousands of devotees from across coastal Karnataka.

Dasara, celebrated in October as part of the nine-day Navaratri festival, features daily Darshana Pooje with Maha Ranga Pooje and Rathotsava on the final day. Two additional observances occur annually: Chandika Yaga and Vishesha Hoovina Pooje on 14 January, and Rashipooje in the last week of April. Daily Worship and Darshan

The temple maintains daily rituals alongside its major festival celebrations. The hereditary priests perform the sacred poojas according to the Kumbara Manethana tradition, ensuring that worship follows established ceremonial practices.

Mariyamma Temple is located in Urwa, Boloor, Mangalore, at coordinates 12.8761°N, 74.8316°E, approximately 5 kilometers from Mangalad Temple in Mangalore city. The best times to visit are February–March for Mari Pooja or October for Dasara, when the temple is alive with festival observance and community gathering. Visitors should dress modestly, as is customary at Hindu temples. Connection to Mangaladevi Temple

Local tradition holds that Goddess Mariyamma and Mangaladevi, the deity of the nearby Mangalad Temple, were sisters. This relationship links the two shrines spiritually and geographically within Mangalore's sacred landscape, and some devotees visit both temples as part of their pilgrimage.
