About Mangaladevi Temple

Located in the Bolara area approximately three kilometers southwest of Mangaluru's city center, the Mangaladevi Temple stands as one of Karnataka's historically significant Hindu shrines. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mangaladevi, revered as a powerful manifestation of Shakti and Parvati, serving as the presiding deity of the city itself. According to temple records, the shrine was constructed during the 9th century by Kundavarman, the most celebrated ruler of the Alupa dynasty, under the spiritual patronage of Matsyendranath. An alternative tradition credits the legendary sage Parashurama with the temple's initial construction, with subsequent expansion undertaken by Kundavarman. The temple complex houses multiple sanctums including the main Mangaladevi shrine, Mahaganapathi shrine, Swayamvara Parvathi shrine, and Naga shrine, reflecting its layered religious significance.
