Madhabananda Temple
About Madhabananda Temple
Two major festivals draw devotees to the temple throughout the year. Bhaimi Bada Ekadashi Yatra occurs during the month of Magha (typically January–February), when the eleventh lunar day of the bright fortnight becomes an occasion for pilgrimage. The second significant observance is Podhuan Jatra, celebrated in the month of Margashira (typically November–December). During this festival, the deity is traditionally carried in procession toward Puri, connecting Niali Madhab with the larger pilgrimage circuit centered on Lord Jagannath. These festivals attract substantial numbers of devotees to the temple.
Visiting the Temple
Madhabananda Temple is located in Madhab village, Niali block, Cuttack district, approximately 50 kilometers from Cuttack city and 45 kilometers from Bhubaneswar. The temple is accessible by public transport operated by CRUT (Cuttack Road United Transport). From Cuttack, bus number 84 departs from CDA-7 Markat Nagar and travels via Phulankhara along the Niali–Kakatpur road, reaching the temple after passing through Panimal. From Bhubaneswar, bus number 63 runs directly from Baramunda via Phulankhara, covering approximately 52 kilometers. Visitors arriving from Puri can take bus number 72 from Shrimandir, which passes through Chandramouli before reaching the temple. Multiple departures operate throughout the day on these routes.
The best times to visit align with the festival calendar: Magha month for Bhaimi Bada Ekadashi Yatra and Margashira for Podhuan Jatra. These periods offer the fullest experience of the temple's ritual life and allow visitors to participate in the larger devotional gatherings that characterize these observances.
Practical Information for Visitors
Visitors should dress modestly when entering the temple, as is customary at Hindu shrines. The temple maintains daily rituals that structure the devotional day, though specific timings for darshan should be confirmed locally upon arrival. Basic facilities exist at the temple, though visitors traveling from Cuttack or Bhubaneswar may wish to plan their journey to allow adequate time for travel and darshan. The temple's location within a village setting means that nearby amenities are limited; visitors should arrange meals and refreshments accordingly.
Connecting with Jagannath Pilgrimage
For those undertaking the pilgrimage to Puri for darshan of Lord Jagannath, a visit to Madhabananda Temple offers a meaningful addition to the journey. The temple's identification as the maternal house of Jagannath creates a spiritual connection within the broader Jagannath tradition. Pilgrims arriving in Puri can make the journey to Niali as a separate excursion, or time their visit to coincide with Podhuan Jatra, when the festival procession itself creates a ceremonial link between the two sacred sites.
