This ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva stands in the Koyambedu neighbourhood of Chennai and represents an important example of Chola-era religious architecture. The temple is distinguished by its northward orientation, which devotees consider auspicious for moksha. The sanctuary contains unique sculptural arrangements, including Dakshinamurti positioned behind the main shrine in the location traditionally reserved for Lingothbava—a rare architectural feature. The temple complex includes a substantial sixteen-pillared mandapa with intricate carvings depicting scenes from the Ramayana adorning its columns. A large sacred tank forms an integral part of the temple grounds.
