About Kundrathur Nageswarar Temple
Located in Kundrathur, Chennai, this historically significant temple was established by Sekkizhar, the celebrated author of the Periya Puranam and a minister in the court of Chola king Kulothunga II. Inspired by his frequent visits to Thirunageswaram near Kumbakonam, Sekkizhar constructed this shrine in his native village following the same architectural and spiritual design, earning it the name Vada Nageswaram (Northern Nageswaram). The temple's presiding deity is Sri Nageswarar, a form of Lord Shiva whose lingam is adorned with a serpent ornament symbolizing Rahu, making it a significant remedial shrine for those seeking relief from Rahu doshas and planetary afflictions. The temple features Chola architectural elements including a five-tier Rajagopuram, and houses 46 stone inscriptions from the Chola, Pandya, and Vijayanagara periods. The shrine also contains a separate sanctuary for Goddess Kamakshi Amman and dedicated shrines for Sekkizhar himself, Ganesha, Murugan, and other deities, with a sacred Champak tree and Surya Pushkarini tank.
