Located approximately three kilometers from Thanjavur city center on the Thanjavur-Kumbakonam road near Sungan Thidal, Kodi Amman Temple houses a five-foot tall Suthai idol of Goddess Kali facing east. According to temple mythology, the demon Thanjan was reborn one crore times before being finally destroyed by Kali in her Pavalakali form, earning her the epithet Kodi Amman (Kali of ten million victories). The temple's legend explains that the city's name evolved from Alagapuri to Thanjapuri after the demon's death, eventually becoming Thanjavur. Notably, the Goddess bears Lord Shiva upon her head rather than riding a lion. The temple draws devotees throughout the day for darshan and aarti, with special pujas performed during festivals like Navaratri and Pongal, and the unique Kaliattam festival celebrated in late Masi or early Panguni.
