Located on Kampatta Viswanathar East Street in Kumbakonam, this traditional Shaivite temple is dedicated to Lord Aadhi Kampatta Viswanathar with consort Aananda Nidhi Ambikai. The temple's name derives from Kampattam, meaning mint street, where Chola kings established gold coin production units. According to temple lore, the sage Dhoomaketu, a renowned scholar who taught students and conducted them on pilgrimages to sacred Shiva temples, received direct darshan from the deity along with the divine mother. In gratitude for Dhoomaketu's devotion and righteous teachings, Lord Shiva granted him this vision and sanctified the spring here as Dhoomaketu Theertham. The temple follows the Kamika Agama tradition with a square sanctum and single-tiered gopuram. Goldsmiths and students traditionally worship here seeking prosperity and academic excellence respectively. The shrine is estimated to date from the 3rd century and remains an important spiritual center for the Kumbakonam and surrounding regions.
