About Gondeshwar Temple

Constructed entirely of black basalt stone, the Gondeshwar Temple exemplifies the Bhumija architectural style characteristic of the Yadava period. The temple complex comprises five shrines arranged in a panchayatana configuration, with the central sanctuary dedicated to Lord Shiva surrounded by four subsidiary shrines honoring Surya, Vishnu, Parvati, and Ganesha. Built on a rectangular platform measuring 125 by 95 feet, the structure showcases intricate stone carvings depicting mythological scenes, floral patterns, and celestial figures that reflect the refined craftsmanship of medieval Deccan artisans. According to local tradition, the temple was commissioned by Rav Govinda, son of the Gavali chief Rav Singhuni, at considerable expense. The temple has endured centuries of invasions and natural deterioration while remaining an active place of worship and is now protected as a heritage monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.
