About Dharmapureesvarar Temple, Vadakandam

Located in Vadakandam village within Tiruvarur district, this ancient temple enshrines the presiding deity Dharmapureesvarar in lingam form, with the goddess Swarnambal in a separate south-facing shrine. The temple lacks a rajagopuram but features a single prakaram enclosed by compound walls with entrances on the eastern and southern sides. The structure displays characteristic Chola-period architecture with an intricate vimanam above the sanctum and a vavvaal-nethi mandapam in the maha-mandapam. Additional shrines within the premises honor Vinayaka, Murugan with consorts Valli and Deivanai, and Chandikeswarar. The site holds historical significance as a Vaippu Sthalam, referenced in Appar's sixth Thirumurai where the ancient name Thalichathangudi derives from a nearby Sastha temple. According to tradition, Lord Shiva passed through this location during a procession from Tirumeignanam to Tiruvarur.
