About Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple

Located in Thirukannamangai, Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Bhaktavatsala Perumal and his consort Goddess Abhishekavalli Thayar. The shrine traces its origins to the 9th century during the Pallava dynasty, with subsequent contributions from Chola and Vijayanagara rulers, as evidenced by inscriptions from kings like Rajendra Chola II and Rajaraja Chola II. The temple showcases traditional Dravidian architecture featuring an imposing rajagopuram, spacious corridors, sacred mandapams, and beautifully designed sanctums. According to temple tradition, the sacred spring Darshana Pushkarini originated from water used by Lord Brahma to perform ablutions during Lord Vishnu's Vamana Avatar. The temple is distinguished by its qualification as a Sapta Amrita Kshetra, meeting all seven criteria of spiritual significance including its vimana, sacred groves, mandapas, and theerthas. A remarkable feature is the ancient honeycomb on the northern side of the goddess's shrine, believed to have been formed by celestial beings who witnessed Lord Vishnu's divine wedding with Mother Mahalakshmi.
