About Cherai Gowreeshwara Temple

Located in Cherai village on Vypeen island in Ernakulam district, Kerala, this temple stands as a unique spiritual landmark known locally as Malayala Palani. Consecrated by the revered social reformer Sree Narayana Guru in 1912, the shrine features an exceptional Chaturmukha Kovil design—reportedly the only such structure in Asia—with four side doors allowing entry from all cardinal directions. The main sanctum houses Lord Subramaniya facing east, while Lord Ganapati faces south, Lord Shiva faces west, and Goddess Parvathy faces north, embodying an inclusive approach to worship. The temple is managed by the Vijnana Vardhini Sabha and draws devotees throughout the day for darshan and ritual worship. The annual festival is among the grandest in Ernakulam district, celebrated with over 30 elephants participating in processions accompanied by traditional Panchavadyam music, Kudamattam umbrella displays, and fireworks.
