About Bhringesvara Siva Temple
Located in the village of Khatuapada on the southeastern outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, the Bhringesvara Shiva Temple represents a significant example of early Hindu temple architecture. Originally dating to the 8th century, the main temple structure reflects late Kalingan architectural style and was rebuilt during the Gajapati period in the 15th century. The temple faces westward and stands on a raised platform measuring 26.50 meters in length and 22.10 meters in width. The presiding deity is a circular yoni pitha with a central aperture, symbolizing the divine feminine principle. The structure features a square vimana with a frontal porch and is adorned with subsidiary shrines housing images of Ganesa and Mahisasuramardini. The temple is constructed from light grey sandstone and has undergone comprehensive renovation using original materials while remaining under the protection of the Odisha State Archaeology department.
