Annapurneshwari Temple, Cherukunnu
About Annapurneshwari Temple, Cherukunnu
Originally established as a Vishnu/Krishna temple over fifteen centuries ago, Annapurneshwari Temple underwent significant transformation when Goddess Annapurneshwari's idol was consecrated under the patronage of Avittam Thirunal Raja Raja Varma of Chirakkal Kovilakam. According to legend, the goddess journeyed from Kashi accompanied by two other deities and a boatman, arriving in a golden vessel at Azhi Theeram, now called Aayiram Thengu. The temple's distinctive architecture features construction from a single type of stone bonded with avil and bellam, with identical-sized sanctums for both Goddess Annapurneshwari and Lord Krishna, reflecting equal reverence to both deities. The main entrance faces Krishna's sanctum, while Annapurneshwari's sanctum lacks a direct entrance, honoring the ancient custom regarding Brahmin women. The temple complex includes a substantial pond called Ambala Kolam spanning approximately 2.5 acres, and is managed by the Malabar Devaswom Board. The temple was re-consecrated on February 23, 1994, during Kumbham month on Pooyam Nakshatram, a date now celebrated annually as Prathishta Dinam.
