This ancient Shiva temple enshrines Lord Shiva as Abimukeswarar and Goddess Parvati as Amrithavalli. According to legend, the deity earned his name when Lord Shiva turned to face and bless devotees upon the arrival of the Nava Kanniyar river goddess. The temple is distinguished by several unique features: it houses Tamil Nadu's tallest Lord Bhairava idol, features a Navagraha shrine where Shani Bhagawan stands taller than the other eight planetary deities, and maintains a sacred gooseberry tree. The temple observes the ten-day Maghi Masam festival with special rituals and processions, and participates in the grand Mahamaham festival when the sacred tank overflows every twelve years, drawing devotees to all twelve connected Shiva temples.
