About Uluwatu Temple

Known locally as Pura Luhur Uluwatu, this temple complex sits on the edge of a rugged limestone cliff that drops directly into the Indian Ocean in Pecatu village. The site holds major religious significance as one of Bali's six spiritual pillars and one of nine directional temples established to protect the island from malevolent forces. Archaeological evidence indicates a structure has existed at this location since at least the 10th century, with significant expansion occurring during the 11th century under the direction of Javanese sage Empu Kuturan, who established the traditional Balinese temple design including split gateways and three-tiered Meru towers. In the 16th century, priest Dang Hyang Nirartha added padmasana shrines and reportedly attained spiritual liberation at this exact location. The temple attracts approximately 1.2 million visitors annually, primarily to witness the sunset and the legendary Kecak Fire Dance performed nightly in a 1,200-seat open-air amphitheater by 50 to 100 men who chant while retelling the Ramayana epic. A surrounding forest habitat supports roughly 650 long-tailed macaques regarded as the temple's spiritual guardians. The inner sanctum remains strictly reserved for Hindu worshippers while outer courtyards are accessible to visitors.
