Trikandiyur Mahadeva Temple
About Trikandiyur Mahadeva Temple
Located in Tirur, Malappuram district of Kerala, Trikandiyur Shiva Temple stands as a revered sanctuary dedicated to Lord Shiva, constructed in traditional Kerala architectural style featuring a circular sanctum with intricate wooden carvings and a sloping tiled roof. The temple complex includes a large sacred pond nearly equal in size to the temple itself, originally built to mitigate fires attributed to the heat from Lord Shiva's third eye, along with subsidiary shrines and sacred groves dotted with bilva trees. Established in 823 CE according to historical records, the temple was destroyed during Tipu Sultan's invasion and subsequently rebuilt by Mandayapurathu Krishna Menon with assistance from local benefactors. The temple serves as both a spiritual center and cultural hub, hosting major festivals including Maha Shivaratri and Thiruvathira, marked by traditional music, lamp offerings, and special poojas, while also conducting the 41-day Mandala Kalam shakti puja from November to December.
