About Thrikkur Mahadeva Temple

Situated in Trikkur village, approximately 10 kilometres northeast of Thrissur city, this protected archaeological monument features a natural cave sanctum sanctorum carved into black rock. The self-manifested Shiva Linga measures six feet in height and two feet in diameter, with the sanctum facing north. Devotees traditionally offer prayers from the left side, viewing the linga in 'parshwa darshan' (side view). A distinctive mughamandapam—a hall entirely carved from hard rock—stands before the sanctum. The temple's premises include a namasakara mandapam supported by sixteen rock pillars and sculptures of Lord Ganesha on the western cave wall, two dwarapalas on the east, and a salagrama in the mugha mandapa. According to legend, Lord Agni performed the installation rituals, and consequently the deity is not taken out during rain. The temple has been a protected monument under the Department of Archaeology, Government of Kerala since 1966 and is currently managed by the Paliyam Trust through the Kshetra Samrakshana Samiti.
