About Thirunarayur Nambi Temple

This ancient Sri Vaishnava temple, believed to have been established by Kochengat Cholan in the late 3rd century CE, occupies a distinctive position among Hindu temples by giving Goddess Lakshmi precedence over Lord Vishnu in worship and ritual. According to legend, Sage Medhavi performed penance seeking the Goddess to manifest as his daughter, and Lakshmi appeared as a child named Vanjulavalli beneath a Vanjula tree. Lord Vishnu subsequently arrived to marry her, establishing the temple's unique theological emphasis. The shrine features traditional Dravidian architecture with impressive gopurams and sacred mandapams, and is particularly celebrated for the Kal Garuda, a stone idol of Garuda that reportedly increases in weight during procession ceremonies. The temple attracts devotees seeking blessings for marriage, prosperity, family harmony, and spiritual fulfillment, and remains a major center of Sri Vaishnavite worship in the Cauvery delta region.
