Temple festivals of Kerala
About Temple festivals of Kerala
Located at an altitude of 914 meters within the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Pathanamthitta district, Sabarimala represents a significant spiritual center in Kerala's rich temple tradition. The temple operates seasonally during Mandala Kalam (41 days from November through December), Makaravilakku (January 14), and Vishu (April), remaining closed for the remainder of the year. The most sacred observance occurs on Makaravilakku night, marked by a celestial star phenomenon. The temple maintains organized facilities for pilgrims including virtual queue systems (mandatory since 2019), online booking for pooja and accommodation services, and multiple daily darshan windows. Morning darshan runs from 2:30 AM to 1:00 PM during the season, with evening sessions from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The Travancore Devaswom Board manages the temple's administration.
