When a great deluge threatened the region, Nandi consumed the floodwaters, preventing destruction and earning the deity the title Pralayakaleswarar. Another legend associated with the site involves celestial maidens sent by Indra, king of the Devas, to gather flowers for worship in the heavenly realm.
