Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple
About Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple
Located in the old city of Kurukshetra in Haryana, the Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple stands as one of the holiest sites in the region, dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, this temple marks the location where Lord Shiva performed penance and granted divine vision to Lord Brahma during the creation of the universe. The Pandavas are said to have worshipped here and received Shiva's blessings for victory in the Mahabharata war, with Arjuna obtaining the Pashupatastra at this sacred site. The temple features a Swayambhu Shivalinga believed to have manifested spontaneously, and an ancient banyan tree where devotees tie threads to fulfill wishes. The architecture follows the Nagara style with an approximately 80-foot-high spire constructed from red sandstone and marble, spanning about 2 acres. The temple complex includes a holy pond whose waters are believed to possess healing properties. Though damaged during medieval invasions and the Mughal era, the temple was repeatedly rebuilt and renovated, achieving its current form in the 18th century through contributions from various rulers and devotees.
