Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, Ahobilam
About Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, Ahobilam
Ahobilam is a revered Vaishnavite pilgrimage site where Lord Vishnu in his fierce Narasimha form—half-man, half-lion—is believed to have emerged from a stone pillar to protect his devotee Prahlada by destroying the demon king Hiranyakashipu. The temple complex spans approximately five kilometres across the Nallamala forest, divided into Upper and Lower Ahobilam, each housing distinct forms of Narasimha representing different moods and mythological episodes. The site derives its name from the exclamation "Aho Bala" ("what great strength") uttered by celestial beings witnessing this divine act. An unbroken spiritual lineage of 46 Jeeyar Swamys has preserved the temple's traditions for over a thousand years. The sacred Ugra Stambham pillar marks the site of the Lord's emergence, and the temple complex is surrounded by dense forest within a protected wildlife sanctuary, requiring trekking to access several of the nine shrines.
