About Someswara Swamy Temple, Appikonda

This coastal temple dedicated to Lord Shiva as Sri Someswara Swamy represents a significant spiritual landmark in Andhra Pradesh. The main sanctum enshrines a swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Lingam, accompanied by subsidiary shrines housing Lord Vinayaka, Lord Kumaraswamy, and a monolithic black stone Nandi sculpture. The temple complex originally contained 101 Shiva Lingams installed by Sage Kapila Maharshi, though only four remain visible today. The structure exhibits Dravidian architectural elements characteristic of Chola-era construction, with intricate carvings of deities and dancers adorning the outer walls. The temple draws over one lakh devotees during Maha Shivaratri celebrations, when elaborate abhishekams and rituals are performed using water from the sacred well that maintains purity despite coastal proximity.
