Siddheshwar Mandir, Palari
About Siddheshwar Mandir, Palari
This west-facing temple, constructed entirely of brick except for its stone doorway and porch, stands on the embankment of Balasamund pond approximately 25 kilometers from Balodabazar. Built around the middle of the seventh century CE based on architectural analysis, it represents a significant specimen of early Chhattisgarh temple construction. The entrance features life-sized sculptures of the river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna in tribhanga mudra, flanked by depictions of the eight directional guardians. The elaborately carved lintel displays Lakulisha with his four disciples, Brahma, and Vishnu, while an upper frieze depicts the wedding of Shiva and Parvati along with scenes of Shiva vanquishing demons. The temple's shikhara is adorned with gavakshas crowned with lion motifs, and the courtyard entrance displays pillars bearing life-sized male figures—an early example of such sculptural placement. A Shivalinga named Siddheshwar is enshrined in the sanctum sanctorum. The monument is protected by the State of Chhattisgarh.
