Shree Govindajee Temple
About Shree Govindajee Temple
This prominent Meitei Hindu temple stands as the largest Vaishnava place of worship in Imphal district of Manipur, enshrining the divine forms of Radha and Krishna venerated locally as Govindaji. The temple's architectural heritage spans nearly two centuries, with its initial construction dating to 1846 during Maharaja Nara Singh's reign, followed by a comprehensive reconstruction undertaken by Maharaja Chandrakriti in 1876. The temple serves as a vibrant center of devotional life, hosting major festivals including Kang (Rathayatra) celebrated over ten days in June or July, during which a twenty-foot chariot adorned with six iron wheels is ceremonially drawn through the town. The Holi festival, locally termed Yaosong, unfolds across five days with elaborate processions, cultural performances including Ras Leela dance forms depicting Krishna's divine pastimes, and community participation in traditional games and celebrations.
