Raghunath Temple
About Raghunath Temple
Raghunath Temple stands as North India's largest temple complex, comprising 17 individual shrines dedicated to various Hindu deities within its walls. The main sanctum houses a black stone idol of Lord Rama (Raghunath), flanked by Goddess Sita and Lord Lakshman, with Lord Hanuman positioned in front. The inner sanctum walls are covered with gold sheeting on three sides, creating a luminous atmosphere distinctive among Ram temples in the region. The complex houses remarkable collections including 14 lakh Shaligrams (sacred stones from the Narmada river), a library of 6,000 Sanskrit manuscripts in ancient Sarada script, and a Sphatik Shivling shrine. Construction began in 1835 under Maharaja Gulab Singh, founder of the Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir, and was completed by his son Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1860. The temple remains open continuously throughout the day without afternoon closure, making it accessible to pilgrims passing through Jammu.
