Located approximately 3 kilometers from Pala in the Mutholy panchayat of Kottayam district, Puliyannoor Mahadeva Temple stands as a significant Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to historical records, the temple was constructed by the Vaishya community, specifically the Chonar Chettikal under the leadership of Chathamplackal Chonar Chettiar, with origins tracing to the 8th century CE. The temple features traditional Kerala architectural style with the primary deity of Shiva facing east, accompanied by subsidiary deities including Ganapathi, Sasthavu, Naga, Yakshi, and others positioned within the inner and outer sanctums. The shrine is administered by Namboothiri families known as the Puliyannoor Oorayma Temple Devaswom. The temple is particularly renowned for its eight-day festival coinciding with Maha Shivaratri, featuring elephant processions, traditional music, and ritual bathing ceremonies at the Meenachil river.
